Step-by-Step DIY Perfume

Updated: Jan 23

You might be the owner of the most luxury fragrance collection, but you will still have a curiosity to dwell in your perfume's secret ways to make people hypnotized. Or you might simply want to learn how to make your perfume by yourself because you are interested in owning a natural fragrance that doesn’t break a bank.

Crafting your dream perfume is totally doable at home. And who knows, you might fall so in love with your homemade scents that you feel empowered to kickstart your own fragrance business.

At the end of the day, all the successful fragrance brands started with a perfume glass and a couple of other ingredients I am about to show you below.

According to which kind of oil we prefer more: essential or carrier oil, there are two types of methods for us to make our very own perfume.

Essential Oil Perfume
Step one

To craft a balanced fragrance, you'll want three categories of scent notes: the top note (comprising 30% of the aroma), the middle or heart note (making up 50% of the aroma), and the base note (which makes up to 20%). Top notes linger for 5 to 15 minutes, middle notes for 20 to 60 minutes, and base notes endure for up to 6 hours. Start by adding 15-17 drops of base notes, followed by 10-15 drops of middle notes, and finish with 10 drops of your chosen scent as a base note.

Step Two

Choose the scents you will use. Popular top notes scents are peppermint, anis, mandarin, grapefruit, lemon, lavender. Some middle note scents are cinnamon, grass, pear, peach etc. Base notes you can use for the making of your perfume are vanilla, musk, moss, cedarwood, etc.

Step Three

After mixing the scent notes together, you add alcohol. It gives your perfume lasting effects. Depending on the amount of the drops of essential oils you used you mix them with alcohol. The right amount for 20 to 30 essential oil drops is one or two ounces of alcohol, but if you use up to 60 essential oil drops, you use three to four ounces of alcohol.

Step Four

The longer you let the created fragrance sit, the better. A perfume made with essential oils will smell nice immediately, but this pleasing smell won’t last for too long or won’t give the same effect it does after letting it age well.

Tip: Ensure the perfume is stored in a glass bottle and minimize exposure to sunlight as much as possible.

Your perfume made of essential oil as one of the ingredients is now done and ready to spread its miracle!

Carrier Oil Perfume

You can also use carrier oil in your perfume making process. Carrier oil moisturizes the skin, and it has no aroma. Therefore, it perfectly fits the standards of a fresh perfume bottle.

The ingredients you need:

  • 2 dark colored glass bottles with air tight lids (a dark-colored bottle preserves the fragrance).

  • Coffe filter.

  • Small funnel.

  • 2 tablespoon carrier oil (Some carrier oils you can use are jojoba, grapeseed oil and sweet almond).

  • 6 tablespoons 100 proof alcohol (buy the strongest alcohol you can).

  • 2,5 tablespoons bottled water.

  • 30 scent notes, 9 drops top notes, 15 drops middle notes, 6 base notes.

Step One

You first take one of your glass bottles and put the carrier oil in it. Take the 30 scent notes and put them in the bottle right after the carrier oil.

Step Two

Add alcohol to all of this mixture and blend all of it together.

Step Three

Close the bottle well and secure the lid. Let the created fragrance age well. The fragrance requires 48 hours to 6 weeks to fully develop its effect.

Step Four

When you open it, mix it with bottled water and shake it well. Take the other glass bottle and transfer the perfume into it by the coffee filter.

Learning how to make your own perfume is powerful. It goes beyond being a fragrance lover; it's like becoming an alchemist, creating magic with every scent you craft.

And just like that, Voila, you’re officially a perfumer.
