A Take on Facial Gua Sha

Updated: Jan 23

Not surprisingly, everyone owns a Gua Sha. It is worth all the hype. Facial and body Gua Sha are two different topics, but in the bigger picture, Gua Sha as a massaging tool is a blessing that has origin from Chinese medicine.

What is Facial Gua Sha?

Facial Gua Sha is a facial treatment for your skin. The benefits of it are the composure of your face muscles. You relieve tension, you can encourage the sculpting of your features, remove puffiness and so much more. You should not apply much pressure on your face while massaging.

If you're a beginner and don't know what you're doing, I would suggest seeking professional treatment. But if you feel well educated and confident about this whole thing, you can do your facial Gua Sha treatment at home by yourself.

What are the Different Types of Gua Sha Stones?

Depending on what your skincare intentions are, you have various alternatives for Gua Sha stones to choose from. Before picking up a Gua Sha stone while shopping, you must know your skin type and its preferences best.

Every Gua Sha stone has unique effects and purposes on our skin.

  • Jade Green - Pick jade green stone if you are searching for anti- aging and skin lifting Gua Sha results.

  • Rose Quartz - A rose quartz Gua Sha stone is for you, if you want give your face a touch of beautiful glow. Rose quartz is also an omen of self-love.

  • Aventurine - This Gua Sha stone is the right answer if your skin gets quickly irritated or even inflamed. Aventurine is also a stone to be held as a symbol of luck.

  • White Jade - If your skin goes through puffiness and you wake up to dark circles, choose the white jade stone. It looks so neat and flawless.

  • Sodalite - It helps with defining your jaw and hairline. Although it has healing and relaxing features, however I do not recommend it for people with irritated skin.

  • Amethyst - A colorful, rare looking stone that serves wellness to your skin if you have ever experienced breakouts.

How to Properly Use Gua Sha?

Before using it, your Gua Sha stone should be clean and completely dry. Wash the tool after every use because it may cause skin infection. Cleanse your face first and then you put moisturizer on, and after that, you put a face oil or hydrating serum that supports your skin type.

You take the Gua Sha tool and use it at a 15-degree angle. Don’t scrub the tool over three to five times per area.

How Often Should You Use Gua Sha?

Take time for yourself, unapologetically. No matter how busy you are, make a skincare routine and fit the Gua Sha massage in it. Two or three times a week is enough, but preferably a Gua Sha routine should be done every day. It doesn’t even ask for more than 10 or 15 minutes.

Mistakes You Should Avoid in Your Gua Sha Routine

As much as you care for your skin and want to do the most to show affection to it, let the energy underneath it, flow. Make sure you don’t put so much pressure, since your skin might be fragile and react.

Every single face area requests unique treatment, so be careful.

Possible Side Effects of Gua Sha Treatment

Gua Sha is very helpful, but sometimes you can name it a blessing in disguise. Some side effects that a Gua Sha massage might have are:

  • Bruising after

  • Discoloration of the skin

  • Swelling

  • Tenderness of the skin

Not to creep you out, but on some specific cases, the results after a Gua Sha treatment might be extreme and you might even end up experiencing fever, compulsion in the treated area or inflammation of skin, so if you get any of these, run for medical help.

Is Gua Sha Appropriate for Everyone?

As much as all of us might want an overall skin glow, Gua Sha is not quite meant for every single person.

Do not use Gua Sha treatment if :

  • you have any skin infection

  • you take blood thinners

  • your skin is very sensitive, and you bleed easily

  • you have any clotting

  • you have had surgery in the last 6 weeks

  • you have fillers or Botox in any area

The best way we can show our gratitude for our skin and the very well-being of it, is by making time for ourselves. Put Gua Sha massaging in your to do list. Choose wisely while buying your Gua Sha massaging tool, and the oils you choose to massage your skin with. A hurt pocket is far way better than a hurt skin.
